Foods of Montreal

I’m fortunate that my place of work provides a week off for Spring Break, which gives us the perfect excuse to get away for a bit! This year, we chose to go somewhere I’ve wanted to go for a while: Montreal, Quebec.

We expected a beautiful city, sure, with lots to see and do. But let’s be honest, we mostly wanted to eat. And with the weather dropping to 0° F for a good portion of the trip, eating warm food was the only thing that sounded good to us. We didn’t get to every place on our list, but we definitely crossed off a few (and yes, we still walked many miles each day in the cold to make up for it). Here are a few Montreal favorites:

A sandwich piled high with meat placed on top of a menu
The Smoked Meat Sandwich from Schwartz’s (just a block down from our rental!)
A counter with raw milk cheeses, meat, and a baguette
Enough raw milk cheese to completely terrify the CDC and FDA
A maple snow taffy stick
Maple Snow Taffy
bags of milk in the grocery store
The ubiquitous “bagged milk” (note: not consumed)
Alyssa and Michael eat bagels in Montreal
Montreal Bagels (sweeter and chewier than NY bagels)
Ketchup flavored Doritos
Ketchup chips (yes, really)
A collage of a meal from Au Pied du Cochon
No trip to Montreal would be complete without a trip to Au Pied du Cochon (unless you are a vegetarian). We had to have the poutine of course. I read different versions of the origins of its name, but I’m pretty sure it stems from the phrase “poutine my mouth.” And since it’s Canada, the after-dinner espresso at APC is accompanied by maple syrup.

What’s your favorite food from Montreal? (Asking for me!)
