Sharing my essential weekend guide to Summers County, West Virginia

West Virginia just might be the country’s best-kept secret, and I’m all too happy to spread the word.

With the exception of a quick jaunt into the northern panhandle, and a chill mountain house rental a few years ago, I’ve spent shamefully little time in this beautiful state. Accessibility is the primary reason for my lack of exploring much of West Virginia – although that’s getting easier for both myself and my regional friends thanks to Contour Airline’s service from Charlotte to Beckley, Clarksburg, Lewisburg, and Parkersburg. There’s one region of the Mountain State that’s easily reached by car: Southern West Virginia, and I bet it is even closer than you think!

This trip was generously hosted by Visit Southern West Virginia and Explore Summers County, but as always, all opinions are my own

For my latest (but certainly not my last!) venture into this Wild and Wonderful state, I only had to drive three and a half hours from home to reach a charming mountain town surrounded by natural beauty: Hinton, West Virginia – the county seat of Summers County.

ABOUT SUMMERS COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA

City of Hinton Bike Rack
Hinton is the seat of Summers County

Summers County is located in Southern West Virginia and serves as the southern gateway to the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. The prime setting provides opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts to engage in activities such as hiking, fishing, and watersports. The area is also a haven for nature lovers and birdwatchers, thanks to the region’s diverse flora and fauna.

Beyond the great outdoors, Summers County has a rich history and vibrant cultural scene. The county seat, Hinton, has an immaculately well-preserved historic district with charming buildings, shops, and restaurants, and serves as the perfect home base for your time in the area.

Five things you may not know about Summers County

  1. The town of Hinton was a major stop along the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Railway during the heyday of the coal industry.
  2. Summers County is home to the John Henry Historical Park, commemorating the legendary folk hero.
  3. Portions of the 1994 film Lassie were filmed in Summers County.
  4. The Greenbrier River and the New River flow through the county, providing ample opportunities for outdoor activities.
  5. Summers County plays host to a number of events throughout the year, such as Hinton Railroad Days – be sure to check the calendar before your visit!

Although Summers County was named for judge and politician George W. Summers, and not the season – there’s really no better time to visit Summers County. Here’s how to spend a perfect summer weekend in the area:

Just a twenty-minute drive from Hinton is a geological masterpiece. The largest waterfall on the New River (which, as one of the oldest rivers in the world, has quite an ironic name), Sandstone Falls, is located within the New River Gorge National Park & Preserve. Thanks to an accessible boardwalk, a mesmerizing display of nature’s force can be seen shortly after veering off New River Road. If you’re short on time, simply follow the boardwalk for stunning views. But if you’re able, I highly recommend strapping on your hiking boots and walking along one of the other trails or paths for a closer look at the falls (you’ll also likely spot people fishing and geese – like, a lot of geese).

Just because I want to keep seeing you out in the world – there is a significant amount of water moving over and around Sandstone Falls, so think twice before jumping in (and should you decide to take the risk please wear a life jacket!).

Upon arrival, the self-guided Hinton Walking Tour is a great way to get to know your way around the city’s historic downtown area. The brochure offers a glimpse at Hinton’s history through its well-preserved buildings, from the C&O Railway Station to the town’s many churches still offering service each week. With 54 stops, it’s also the perfect way to get your steps in! Note: the brochure must be requested in advance.

You’ll rarely see a movie theater in any of my destination guides, because I always recommend that travelers seek out experiences that they can’t find at home. But every once in a while, a theater is special enough to make it on the site. The Ritz Theatre in downtown Hinton was built in 1929 and restored 80 years later so patrons can continue catching blockbuster films and stage performances. A tub of popcorn and a new favorite movie is the perfect way to wind down after an active day exploring the region – head here to see what’s playing and for current admission prices.

Here’s hoping your visit falls on the second Saturday of the month when it seems like all of Hinton gathers in City Park for an outdoor concert. Head to the Second Saturdays Facebook page for the current schedule, and don’t forget your lawn chair!

Otter & Oak feels a bit like the beating heart of Hinton. Named for the playful and strong nature of the community, this space serves as a gathering place for locals and as the perfect souvenir shop for visitors. Walking through the front doors, guests are greeted with a smile and an excellent selection of clothing, shoes, and gear for outdoor activities, as well as a variety of local goods (curious about what went home with us? Michael snapped up a washable cap, and I chose a sweet souvenir in the form of a patch, ready to be ironed onto a trusty denim jacket).

Heading upstairs lands you at the counter of Otter & Oak Cafe, where you’ll find your caffeine needs met for the weekend. If you’re not in a rush, the tables overlooking 2nd Avenue are a great spot to sip your espresso and people-watch. If you just can’t wait, at least spend some time browsing the racks of local art while you wait for your beverage.

Looking to get out on the water while in Hinton? Consider renting a Standup Paddleboard through Otter & Oak! We were treated to an afternoon on Bluestone Lake with Holli of Mountainplex Properties, LLC, paddling the placid waters and taking in the surrounding beauty. Five years have passed since our last SUP outing, so I was a little nervous about getting out on the water again – but the calm waters, along with Holli’s encouragement and expertise, made it a breeze. If you’re ready to give SUPboarding a go, this is an excellent place to start!

If you’re a little too nervous to try paddleboarding, all is not lost! Otter & Oak also offers tube and kayak rentals, so you can still enjoy your time on the water at your own level of comfort.

Although the Almost Heaven Swing at Bluestone Lake was installed just months before this post was published, I have a feeling it will become a classic photo op. Hop on the swing and take turns snapping photos in front of the beautiful scenery. Traveling alone? There’s a ledge at the perfect height so you can capture your moment.

WHERE TO DINE IN HINTON

For classic café (soups, sandwiches, salads) and (pizza, burgers, hot dogs) pub fare, join the locals in line at The Market On Courthouse Square. This popular spot was never not busy during our weekend in Hinton, but there somehow seems to be enough space to seat everyone. Everyone seems to have their go-to dish at The Market, but an informal survey concluded that burgers and pizzas are the must-order items here (naturally we had to try both, and I think they’re right!). Order your meal and a local beer at the counter and find your spot next to a sunny window or at a prime people-watching table out front. After a busy day hiking and paddleboarding, there’s nothing better.

For a healthy and wholesome meal, don’t miss Lucky Rivers Cafe. This eclectic cafe on 2nd Avenue prioritizes local ingredients and purveyors, crafting unique dishes celebrating Appalachia. Consider ordering the Buddha Belly Bowl to meet your veggie quota for the day, or ordering what’s on special – but no matter what, don’t leave without dessert! I’m still dreaming of that carrot + banana cake

WHERE TO STAY IN SUMMERS COUNTY

A home-away-from-home right in the heart of it all

The Guest House Inn On Courthouse Square is the perfect place to call home during your time in Southern West Virginia. Situated alongside Courthouse Square, this non-hosted Bed & Breakfast consists of a row of properties on James Street, offering an assortment of accommodations options for groups of varying sizes. No matter which property you choose, all aspects of your time at The Guest House are contactless – but all the information guests need is provided in advance and a phone number is provided if further assistance is needed.

Michael and I stayed in the Townhouse 215 James, the newest property in The Guest House’s lineup. This spacious two-story townhome offers two bedrooms and one-and-a-half bathrooms, and a fully furnished kitchen, dining area, and living space. I couldn’t help but feel at home during our stay, thanks to the warm and cozy furnishings (a welcome contrast to the barebones IKEA-filled rental that we often encounter). Waking up in the morning and padding downstairs to brew a cup of coffee and prepare the provided breakfast items compounded that feeling. On summer mornings, it is quite a treat to pass over the dining room table in favor of enjoying breakfast on the covered porch.

As we were just traveling as a duo, we had way more space than we knew what to do with, and the Townhouse would have been equally as comfortable had a second couple joined us. The bed was comfortable, the rooms were immaculately clean, and the full bathroom upstairs was fully stocked in case we forgot anything (and if we were relaxing downstairs, being able to skip the flight of stairs meant the half-bath off the kitchen rear was also appreciated!).

The inn’s central location places guests mere blocks from Hinton’s local businesses and within easy reach of the area’s natural wonders. Whether you’re planning to visit for a weekend or a week, I highly recommend choosing to call The Guest House Inn your Hinton home.

ON THE WAY…

On your way to or from Hinton, make sure to take a detour through Raleigh County!

The climb to the top of the Turkey Spur Overlook isn’t for the faint of heart, but it’s worth it!

I’m not sure a place has ever lived up to its name quite as well as Grandview does. Originally a part of the West Virginia State Park system, today Grandview is part of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. This section of the park offers ample opportunity for hiking and recreation, but many visitors make their way here for the expansive views of the New River Gorge and its surrounding landscapes.

Don’t just stop at the Main Overlook (down a path from the visitor center parking lot) – be sure to make the short drive to the Turkey Spur Overlook. The views from the parking lot are quite beautiful, but if you have it in you, take on the stair climb up to the top for an even more rewarding view.

Beckley’s Tamarack Marketplace is a one-of-a-kind marketplace that celebrates the crafts and cuisine of West Virginia. Part-restaurant, part-artisan shop, part-educational experience, a stop at Tamarack is the perfect way to learn more about the state’s cultural heritage and support local artisans.

Wander the loop of handcrafted goods, including quilts and fiber crafts, ceramics, woodworking, and local food products to work up an appetite. The on-site restaurant serves Appalachian-inspired cuisine, and on Sunday, brunch is served all day (yay!). End your visit to Tamarack on a sweet note by sharing a scoop of local ice cream.

A pitstop at The Chocolate Moose for coffee or a treat is non-negotiable. This cute coffee shop in Beckley has a knack for coming up with creative combinations, but you can order a plain coffee, too. Fair warning for those with kiddos: you might get swayed into playing a round of minigolf out back!

WITH MORE TIME IN SOUTHERN WEST VIRGINIA

Boats on Bluestone Lake
Bluestone Lake State Park isn’t the only state park in the region!

More time in the region means more time to get out and explore all that nature has to offer! Here are a few more outdoor activities I’m eyeing for future visits:

  • Pipestem Resort State Park | With zipline tours, guided fishing trips, mountain biking, restaurants, cabin rentals, and more, this state park is a destination on its own.
  • Whitewater Rafting | West Virginia is home to some of the country’s best rapids, and there are so many excursions to choose from.
  • Caverns | Blurring the lines between outdoors and indoors, these caverns offer a unique perspective on West Virginia.
  • New River Gorge Bridge Walk | The New River Gorge Bridge might just be the most iconic part of the park – and you can traverse it on foot from the catwalk.
  • Winterplace Ski Resort | For a completely different seasonal experience, this ski resort offers the chance to hit the slopes.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON VISITING SOUTHERN WEST VIRGINIA

The night sky with many stars
West Virginia offers plenty of opportunities for stargazing

A weekend in West Virginia was a nice change of pace from day-to-day life in Charlotte – a break I honestly didn’t even realize I needed until I arrived. Sure, time moves at a more comfortable clip there, but the cool, mountain air offered a sense of peace and renewal I didn’t expect. I can’t wait to return and explore more of this extraordinary region.

Thank you to Visit Southern West Virginia, Explore Summers County, and local destination partners for your generous hospitality and for making this visit possible!
