Alyssa writes in a journal set on a map

What a weird week, right? Having a day off in the middle of the week really threw me for a loop, like having a Monday and Friday back-to-back, twice. If you’re in the U.S., did you do anything fun to celebrate the Fourth? Typically we make a long weekend of it, but with a Wednesday holiday it just didn’t make sense, so we spent the day getting stuff done around the house. Not fun, but necessary.

Here’s what else I’ve been up to this week:

Travel

We’re currently in the planning stages for a couple of upcoming trips, once we figure out what our itinerary will be, we will begin booking trains and accommodations. These Amsterdam Bridge Houses are really tempting, but I’m not sure Michael will go for it!

I’ve been obsessing over the Instagram accounts of a couple of restaurants in cities we’ll be traveling to, like this one in Mexico City and this one in Amsterdam. Alllll the heart eyes.

The New York Times recently wrote an article about the Kansas City Streetcar, which we had the pleasure of riding on our visit last year. I didn’t realize the transportation option was so new! I hope other cities begin to adopt this model, as it would make for great late-night transit as well as connecting large hubs of other transit.

Food

These vegan, no-bake peanut butter cookies look like the perfect thing to make on a Sunday and store in the office fridge (in an unassuming container, obviously, so no one will steal them) for the daily 3 p.m. slump.

Talk about an epic fail. I found what sounded like a delicious-yet-healthy mashup of my favorite things in the recent issue of Shape magazine, and it was just no bueno. The recipe for Avocado-Key Lime Pie is not on the magazine’s website, but I did find another blogger’s take on it here. It worked for her but just did not do it for us.

Style

This quick piece from WhoWhatWear shows how nine women around the world styled the same dress. The featured dress isn’t really my style, but I love seeing looks across the globe.

Did anyone get anything from the Sevilla Smith sample sale last weekend? I was hoping for a pair of Liz Mules in undyed leather with a 2- or 3-cm heel or the Terilyns in Grey but neither was available. I came close to getting a pair of Terilyns in Sienna but waffled too long and they sold out. It simply wasn’t meant to be!

Things I bought this week

I’ve been searching for the perfect Breton top for a while now, and though it’s a closet staple it’s tough to find! On our last visit to NYC, I popped into Saint James to try on a few styles but was unhappy with the fabric and fit. I also ended up returning the striped Cuyana tee from several weeks back, as I decided I would rather have a striped top with longer sleeves. So this week I ordered a version from Sézane and from People Tree via ASOS (for free shipping/returns). I’m also hunting for a great pair of high-rise denim for long flights, and tried out two pairs from Reformation (you may have seen my mini-review in Instagram Stories earlier this week). I took the black pair in my normal size but should have sized down, and I took the blue pair in a size down and should have kept my normal size. Both are headed back, and I may consider reordering in the blue wash, as it felt a bit more sturdy and substantial than the black. Not pictured are two Uniqlo Airism t-shirts, which I ordered for layering under silk tops or other delicates that I don’t want to have to wash right away. They are also great for sleeping or last-minute hiking and take up very little room in my suitcase.

What have you been reading/watching/doing lately? I’d love to know!
