Where to Find the Best Coffee in Amsterdam

A Flat White from Lot Sixty-One Coffee in Amsterdam

On my recent trip to Amsterdam, I had plenty of opportunities to explore Amsterdam’s coffee scene during my week in the city, particularly after a rough flight over. There are certainly many places to get your caffeine fix, but I also found a few duds. To help you avoid the latter, I thought I would devote an entire post to coffee in the city (if you’re looking for tips on the other kind of coffeeshops, sorry, that’s a topic for another post!).

Here is a roundup of my favorite cafés in Amsterdam:

CoffeeConcepts

CoffeeConcepts | Multiple Locations

CoffeeConcepts is a small, local chain with four two locations in the city (and one more on the way). I visited the spot on Jacob Obrechtstraat on my way to the Van Gogh Museum one chilly morning. The vibe was very relaxed, and the staff certainly knew what they were doing. A popular hangout, I may have had trouble finding a seat if I wasn’t taking my coffee to go. One note, there were quite a few signs throughout the seating area warning of pick-pockets, although this is something that should always be in the back of your mind in a crowded place.

Koffie Academie

Koffie Academie roasts its own beans and offers both milk-based drinks and pour-overs. Located near the Vondelpark, you can order your coffee and a snack for takeaway and set out for some prime people-watching. Their granola bar was one of the best I’ve ever had – not too sweet yet still moist and chewy.

Coffeecompany

Coffeecompany | Multiple Locations

There are many Coffeecompany locations throughout the Netherlands, and in Amsterdam, it seems you’re never far from one. While I typically shy away from places with as many locations as Coffeecompany has when I travel, I ended up visiting twice, as they were open when others were not. In this case, it’s clear to see why they were able to successfully open so many operations.

Blink and you’ll miss tiny Drupa Coffee Roasters in the Jordaan. Use that to your advantage, because the rest of the passers-by will likely miss it, and you’ll have the chance to relax and enjoy your cup of coffee inside. Getting our usual pour-over and a flat white was such a treat. In particular, Michael’s flat white tasted of toasty, nutty espresso rather than coffee-flavored milk, a taste I encountered at a few cafés during my stay. While you’re there be sure to pick up a bag of beans to bring home; prices are quite reasonable.

Bakers & Roasters

Bakers & Roasters | Multiple Locations

I received many recommendations from people to check out Bakers & Roasters, which is a New Zealand coffee and brunch spot in De Pijp. Michael very much enjoyed his flat white, but my pour-over was so light it was nearly like drinking tea. If I had time or room in my stomach, however, it looked like a lovely spot to have lunch.

NAKED espresso

Located in the heart of De Wallen, NAKED espresso was my final stop while in Amsterdam. However, it would also be a great first stop when arriving in the city as it is not too far from the train station. It was nearly empty inside during my visit due to an ongoing race in the city center, but I expect it gets quite busy at times. That being said, staff seemed equally happy to make a cup to enjoy inside or for takeaway.

LOT61 Coffee Roasters is the kind of place I’d love to have in my home city. It’s a cozy space with more seating inside than you’d expect, and also a few places outside to sit if the weather is nice. The coffee is wonderful, but do expect a bit of a wait at busy times; they were unwilling to make a pour-over during our visit due to the small crowd however their flat white was a great consolation.

bonus content: Stroopwafels!

It would be very remiss of me not to mention a decent maker of stroopwafels among all of these great coffee places. The sweet, sticky discs are a perfect accompaniment to a warm drink, and I quite like them with my coffee. van Wonderen Stroopwafels makes the Dutch staple with a variety of toppings, and to be honest, it’s a tough choice! My recommendation? Grab a friend and share both!
