A Comparison of The Gathered Drape Trench and The Long Mac Coat from Everlane

At first glance, these two trench coats from Everlane appear very similar.

(You’d be forgiven if you thought they were the same coat, just in two different colors).

After all, they both have button fastenings, pointed collars, and storm flaps, and both are generously oversized. They both serve the very same purpose: to protect the wearer from the cold and the rain, stylishly.

Alas, they are two different coats so there are a few minor differences, and I thought it would be helpful today to share a short comparison of the two in case you were waffling between them. I’ll share a little info about each coat, images showing the fit of each coat, and which one I’m keeping.

First, some housekeeping: although these trench coats are shown in different colorways, The Gathered Drape Trench and The Long Mac Coat are both shown in a size small. For reference, my current measurements are 37″-28″-41.5″ and I am 5’4″ tall.

Note for 2024: These coats are no longer available; head here to see Everlane’s current trench offerings

About The Gathered Drape Trench and The Long Mac Coat

The Gathered Drape Trench is made from a 60% Lyocell/40% Cotton blend and comes in three colors and one print (shown here in the Khaki/Black gingham print – no longer available). It features slightly-gathered sleeves, a pointed collar, a high back slit, a removable belt, and is unlined. The fabric feels smooth and slightly silky to the touch and doesn’t tend to hold wrinkles. It has a nice, flowy drape, and when fully fastened, might be easily mistaken for a dress. In the size small, the length from shoulder to hem is 46.5″.

The Long Mac Coat has a 100% Cotton shell with a 100% Recycled Polyester lining and comes in three solid colors (shown here in Toasted Coconut). With raglan sleeves, buttoned cuffs, storm flaps, water-resistant fabric, and a high back slit, it better fits the mold for a traditional mac. It is partially lined, and the fabric feels quite thick and sturdy – and it tends to hold wrinkles. The Long Mac Coat is generously sized and has a shoulder-to-hem length of 46.5″ in the size small. Not noted on the website description is that the left sleeve has an unmissable embroidered letter E.

The measurements for each coat are strikingly similar, however, the fabric greatly impacts how the coats fit. Thanks to the swishier fabric of The Gathered Drape Trench, the coat glides along the body more gently – and of course, the belt brings it in for a snugger fit if desired. The structure of The Long Mac Coat causes it to balloon out a bit more, even if the bottom portion is unlined. As mentioned, I’m wearing a small in both of these jackets; I feel confident that if I sized down one or even two sizes there would still be enough wiggle room on my frame.

Which coat is right for me?

If you’ve visited my blog or Instagram any time in the past month or two, you might know the answer already – but if not: I’m keeping The Gathered Drape Trench. It feels oversized in a good way; in The Long Mac Coat, I feel a bit like a child playing dress up in her father’s coat. The sleeves are far too long and unable to be cuffed easily, and I miss the opportunity for waist definition. I may eventually order The Long Mac Coat in a smaller size, but for now, it isn’t a priority (but I’ll be sure to update this post if anything changes!).
