Traveling Light: Packing List for St. Louis, Missouri

Sharing everything I packed in my carry-on for a weekend in St. Louis, Missouri

Well, Michael and I finally made it to St. Louis, Missouri, and we did so in celebration of our tenth dating anniversary at that. With only thirty hours in the city we had no excuse but to pack lightly – which was just fine as we were traveling back on Frontier Airlines (notorious for their extra charges, such as carry-on luggage). We packed all of our items into my Away Carry-On and used the matching set of four packing cubes for the first time (review to come after a few more flights – Update: the review is here!).

Michael used the smallest and largest cubes, and I packed all of my clothing into the two medium-sized cubes. All of my underwear, socks, bras, and PJs went in one cube and my day/night clothing in the other. I included a rare pair of heels this time around in my suitcase, yet we still had plenty of room left over for souvenirs (though we didn’t purchase any).

Stepping off the plane in St. Louis in August felt the same as stepping on the plane in Florida – positively swampy. Thankfully I packed plenty of natural fibers to keep me cool, along with jeans and a sweater to keep me warm on the freezing flights. You’ll also notice that all of the tops I brought are black. Why? Though black fabric tends to feel warmer, it also hides sweat very well. And due to the heat, I packed four tops for two days – if I can’t shower or change anything else, having a fresh top makes all the difference. Thankfully Saturday evening brought a little relief from the heat, and our anniversary dinner was the perfect opportunity to break out a new (to me) silk LBD. I don’t normally advocate wearing a new item on a trip, but I just couldn’t resist!

Here is what I packed in my half of the carry-on suitcase:

You’ve seen this one before – several times, in fact. Getting through security is a breeze in this, and despite being a “basic” outfit, the silk tank kicks things up a notch. Wearing my Only Child bandana as a necklace is TSA-friendly and adds a pop of color to an otherwise quiet outfit.

We made it from the airport to the Bed and Breakfast in our airplane clothes – and that’s about as far as I could go in long pants. After a quick change, we were ready to head out to explore – I kept my bandana and swapped in a tank and cutoffs. We walked several miles and I was definitely sweaty by the end, but still managed to look pretty un-rumpled until sunset.

I was excited to “unveil” this dress for our anniversary dinner. It feels feminine but understated, and the silk is so dreamy. These sandals are a non-conventional pairing, but I needed something walkable and they worked just fine.

I had hoped to avoid wearing jeans during the hottest part of the day, but our plans had changed and our itinerary then required it. A day at City Museum meant lots of climbing and crawling and sliding – and something that would cover my knees.

Thankfully I packed a spare black tee for the plane ride home (though Michael was my seatmate and would have had to deal with it no matter what). Feeling extra comfortable was especially appreciated since we were subjected to a flight delay and also flying last class; this cardigan was like a warm, friendly hug to bundle up in.

That’s a wrap for St. Louis! I broke my “don’t wear new things on a trip” rule this time, and thankfully it all worked out. Have you ever brought along a new item, only to have a travel wardrobe mishap?
