Quince Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater Dress Review

I know that it’s technically spring, but I still have some cool weather dressing on my mind as we get ready to travel to some Northern destinations over the next month.

Fueled by the success of my recent Quince sweaters and silk slip dress purchases, my curiosity about the brand’s cashmere dresses recently got the very best of me. I figured, if I’m happy with my sweaters and happy with my dress, why not try an item that combines both elements?

You wouldn’t know it from a quick glance at the model photos, but Quince actually offers two styles of cashmere dresses: the Mongolian Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater Dress and the Mongolian Cashmere Textured Sweater Dress. The former has a slightly slimmer fit and a full turtleneck, and the latter has a slightly more relaxed fit with a mock neck and ribbed texture.

Torn between the two, I turned to the customer reviews. Because Quince incentivizes leaving reviews with a photo, there are usually enough product reviews to help you get an idea of how a garment might fit. The number of reviews and the classic styling of the Mongolian Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater Dress swayed me toward purchasing it over the Mongolian Cashmere Textured Sweater Dress – but only just barely. I’m always torn between sizes in Quince but gleaned enough help from the reviews to order a size Medium.

When it arrived, the first thing I noticed was how much it felt like my cashmere crew (reviewed here) – which makes sense, as they are both made from 12-gauge cashmere. Holding it in my hand, I could gather that the fabric was lightweight and has a nice drape. The shape is a different story; the sweater dress has a raglan-knit shoulder, whereas the crewneck sweater has seamed shoulders. And the dress has the whole turtleneck thing going on, of course, a fact this dress takes very seriously. The turtleneck is extremely long, still coming up nearly to the chin when folded double. My preference is to fold it once more, to hit at the mid-neck.

But a garment’s fit is most important – especially when it comes to an item that isn’t easily altered – and I’ll just go ahead and say that I’m not thrilled with the fit of this dress.

I’m wider on my lower half, and this dress is probably a better fit for someone with the opposite proportions. The fabric is a little snug across my lower half (something I’m used to dealing with) and very loose in the waist and shoulders. The biggest fit issue for me, though, is the combination of the large armhole and the short dress length. When my arms are at my sides, the dress hits comfortably at mid-thigh. But if I lift my arms, the dress lifts as well, revealing way too much to share here and leaving me feeling very exposed.

And because of the stretched fabric across my lower half, it has become very apparent that the cashmere isn’t as plush as it really should be – in fact, it’s pretty sheer. Sheerness in a top is easily managed, but the thin fabric on the lower half will be much quicker to snag as we make our way through the world.

These two factors are enough to convince me to return this dress and resume my cashmere dress hunt. Perhaps the Mongolian Cashmere Textured Sweater Dress, with the addition of the fisherman’s ribbing, might be a little less sheer – but I’m not holding my breath. One thing is for sure, though: the Mongolian Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater Dress is going back. And thankfully, the generous return policy made that decision much easier.
